Children who have a solid foundation of literacy skills have a better chance of succeeding throughout their school careers, breaking the cycle of poverty, and reaching their full potential. Unfortunately, in the parts of the world where we operate, students' literacy development is severely hampered by inadequate teacher training, a lack of high-quality reading materials, and a poor learning environment. Research shows that children who have not developed basic literacy skills by third grade will never catch up.
A teacher who knows how to teach and promote reading and writing skills is crucial for young students. That's why we offer continuing education courses for teachers, where experts from education, culture, science, and politics teach holistic teaching methods.
We also train teachers in library management and how to conduct activities that encourage students to read independently. Our on-site staff regularly monitor the library environment and provide feedback so communities know how to maintain a well-functioning library long after our support ends.

We design our literacy programs to create long-term, systemic change in the communities where we work. This means working closely with communities to ensure that activities continue in schools for many years after the BOOKS FOR CHANGE intervention. We engage with communities early in project planning and share costs to build community ownership and equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to continue activities in schools and source books themselves.
We also advocate for teachers and work with them to develop effective literacy initiatives that meet children's needs. To facilitate this, we invite teachers to multi-day professional development seminars where speakers from the cultural, educational, scientific, and political communities share their knowledge.
