The education system in Nepal has improved in recent years, but many children and young people are not able to benefit from it. Literacy skills, especially in rural areas, still remain well below international averages. While government investment has increased with the construction of schools, there is a lack of child-friendly spaces where children can play, learn, read and educate themselves according to their personal interests and needs. By building libraries, we create a play and meeting-friendly environment that meets local needs and where children, teachers and young people can meet in a playful, informal manner. However, a good library, with mostly books in the local language, is only one side of the coin. In order to have a lasting effect, reading and writing skills must also be promoted by the teachers in the classrooms with reading activities and the project must be supported by the local population. That is why all our projects are implemented by our local team with the involvement of the local community. We also promote the further training of teachers by inviting them to a multi-day seminar every year with various speakers from business, art and culture, education, research and technology.
Every project is supported by the following four pillars:
project number | NEP 21-009 |
Accompanied by | BOOKS FOR CHANGE, Youth Foundation Nepal |
project location | Nuwakot, Nepal |
number of beneficiaries | 64 children and young people, six teachers |
main emphasis | training |
funds required | 4000 francs |
status | Open, in implementation |
Creation of an exchange, learning and encounter oasis by setting up a school library. This supports and promotes the reading and writing skills of children and young people.
The aim is to create an oasis of play and encounters where the children can meet and exchange ideas. The focus is on the library as a meeting place for children, teachers and families.
With improved reading and writing skills, students achieve better results in school. They broaden their horizons of knowledge and remain motivated to attend school. Children's books also have a magical effect on their young readers and are able to impress them. They strengthen the willpower, create role models and influence the social behavior of the children.
