    Children who have a solid foundation of literacy skills are more likely to succeed throughout their school careers, break the cycle of poverty and reach their full potential. Unfortunately, in the parts of the world where we operate, the development of student literacy skills is severely hampered by inadequate teacher training, a lack of quality reading materials and a poor learning environment. Research shows that children who don't develop basic literacy skills by third grade will never catch up.

    A teacher who knows how to teach and promote literacy skills is crucial for young students. That is why we offer further training courses for teachers in which experts from education, culture, science and politics teach holistic teaching methods.

    We also train teachers to manage a library and conduct activities that encourage students to read independently. Our on-site staff regularly monitor the library environment and provide feedback so communities know how to maintain a well-functioning library long after our support has ended.

            impact and sustainability

            We design our literacy programs to create lasting, systemic change in the places where we work. This means we work closely with the communities to ensure that activities in the schools continue for many years after the BOOKS FOR CHANGE intervention. We work with communities early in project planning and share costs to empower communities and equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to continue activities in the schools and book books themselves procure.

            We also advocate for and work with educators to develop effective literacy initiatives that meet children's needs. In order to make this possible, we invite the teachers to seminars lasting several days, where speakers from culture, education, science and politics impart their knowledge.
